Nootropics – brain supplements – are one of the fastest-growing segments in dietary supplements. Thousands of people in Sweden search for nootropics every month, but it is still a topic surrounded by confusion. What exactly is a nootropic? What works? And what is legal to buy and use in Sweden?
What is considered a nootropic?
The concept was coined by the Romanian chemist Corneliu Giurgea in the 1970s and refers to substances that improve cognitive function – memory, learning, focus, or mental endurance – without significant side effects. In practice, it is now used as an umbrella term for everything from caffeine and L-theanine to more advanced substances.
There is an important distinction between natural nootropics (dietary supplements) and pharmacological nootropics (medicines like modafinil). It is the natural ones we focus on here – those you can actually buy legally in Sweden without a prescription.
Which natural nootropics work?
Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a medicinal mushroom that stimulates the production of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein important for brain cell growth and maintenance. It is one of the most well-researched natural nootropics for long-term cognitive health.
L-theanine combined with caffeine is one of the best-studied combinations for focus and alertness – without the jitters that caffeine alone can cause. L-theanine is an amino acid from green tea and increases alpha brain waves, the state associated with relaxed alertness.
Bacopa monnieri is a classic Ayurvedic herb with documented effects on memory and learning. The effect comes gradually and requires consistent use for 8–12 weeks – it is not an acute supplement but a long-term one.
Ginkgo biloba improves blood circulation in the brain and has shown effects on memory and concentration in studies, especially in older adults. It is one of the best-selling dietary supplements in the world.
What is legal in Sweden?
Most natural nootropics – lion's mane, ginkgo biloba, bacopa, L-theanine, ashwagandha, and similar – are completely legal to buy and use in Sweden as dietary supplements. The grey area arises with substances like racetams (piracetam, aniracetam) and nootropics classified as medicines, such as modafinil. These require a prescription. At Noop, we only sell legal, natural nootropics.
How should you start?
If you are new to nootropics, lion's mane and L-theanine are a good place to start. Lion's mane for long-term cognitive health, L-theanine for acute focus and calm. Add ginkgo biloba if memory and mental clarity are priorities.
