Does creatine affect VO2 max or just strength?

Creatine is associated with barbells, and running with oxygen uptake. Yet more runners are trying creatine and wondering whether it can increase VO2 max or whether its benefits are limited to explosive performance.

The short answer is that creatine does not directly increase VO2 max, but may affect the quality of the sessions in which aerobic capacity develops. The difference is worth understanding before deciding whether the supplement belongs in your running plan.

Creatine's role in running

Creatine replenishes muscle phosphocreatine stores, which regenerate ATP during brief peaks in effort. In running, this relates to acceleration, sprints, short uphill bursts and exiting bends on a track. Intervals with short recovery may also feel more consistent because recovery between efforts is faster.

If you mainly run long distances at a steady pace, direct benefits are less clear. However, creatine may support strength elements such as running drills, jumping exercises and gym sessions aimed at a stronger push-off.

Oxygen uptake and power are different systems

VO2 max is determined primarily by the heart's pumping capacity, blood volume and muscle mitochondria. Creatine works on the muscle cell's rapid energy system. These are different processes, which is why trials have rarely shown a direct increase in VO2 max in runners already training endurance regularly.

The interesting effect is indirect. If you maintain better quality in faster sessions and complete more intervals as planned, you also develop aerobic capacity more effectively over time. The benefit lies in carrying out training rather than a laboratory figure changing directly.

For track runners, trail runners facing frequent climbs or anyone doing many hill intervals, extra stores may be valuable. The same applies if you periodise gym work alongside running and want to retain squat power without compromising your next distance session.

Three grams a day is enough

Noop's creatine monohydrate is dosed at 3 grams a day, measured using a suitable scale or the product's dosing measure, and mixed into water, juice or a protein shake. No loading phase is needed. This is the amount required for the authorised performance claim: creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high-intensity exercise.

Timing matters less. Consistency over weeks is what counts, so link the dose to an existing habit and keep it on rest days too.

If you combine running with gym work, creatine is usually most noticeable during heavy lifts and sprint-like intervals. VO2 max is still developed best through volume, threshold sessions and long runs. Creatine complements good nutrition, sleep and structured recovery.

Try it during a quieter training period first

Introduce creatine in a training period well away from your main seasonal goal, rather than in the weeks before an important race. This gives you time to observe your response without compromising a key event.

Track speed, perceived effort and how quickly your heart rate falls between intervals in your training log. Notice how hills feel too. Give it a few weeks before drawing conclusions, and change one thing at a time so you know what caused what.

For some, creatine becomes a daily tool throughout the year. Others use it in strength-focused phases before speed and threshold blocks, especially when running is combined with strength training.
